Dr. Tan's work focuses on improving the observation of global precipitation using spaceborne instruments and advancing our understanding of processes related to precipitation. Currently, he is working on NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, refining the algorithm for the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) dataset, which is the leading GPM product that provides precipitation estimates globally at 0.1° every half-hour.
Prior to his current position, he was a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellow under Dr Lazaros Oreopoulos and Dr Water A. Petersen from 2014 to 2017. His work centered on the evaluation of GPM precipitation datasets and investigating the relationship between precipitation and clouds using satellite observations.
He received his Ph.D. from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia in 2014, with a focus on exploring the properties of tropical convection through cloud observations. He also has a M.Sc. in Earth Physics from the Australian National University (2010) and a B.Sc. (Hon.) in Physics from the National University of Singapore (2009).
