FOR STUDENTS

GESTAR Graduate Research Assistants Program

Founded in May 2011, Goddard Earth Sciences Technology & Research (GESTAR), a cooperative agreement between USRA and Goddard Space Flight Center, is developing its Graduate Research Assistants program to prepare the next generation of research-driven scientists. This unique program aims to supply students with end-to-end support, from their first day as graduate students to the day they receive their doctoral degrees. In conjunction with their university partners (Morgan State University and Johns Hopkins University), GESTAR would provide graduate students access to MSU and JHU faculty as well as the opportunity to conduct doctoral research alongside scientists at NASA GSFC.

To apply for a GESTAR Fellowship, apply to programs offered by one of our partner universities listed below:

MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Morgan State University, which has been providing higher education opportunities for over 140 years, is solely designated as Maryland's Public Urban University. As a University Partner with GESTAR, MSU offers a Ph.D. program in Bio-Environmental Sciences wherein students work with faculty from the university's Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math and Computer Science Departments. The program, designed with an interdisciplinary approach in mind, utilizes specialization and training to prepare students for future opportunities. Students in MSU's Ph.D. in Bio-Environmental Sciences can choose from five areas of concentrations: Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Health Sciences, and Environmental Biotechnology. While the courses offered are primarily for doctoral students, all graduate students may participate.

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

Johns Hopkins University, whose mission since 1876 has been "Knowledge for the World", excels in teaching and research and has nine academic divisions and campuses in the Baltimore-Washington area. JHU's Ph.D. program in Earth and Planetary Sciences (E&PS) encourages independent research as well as collaborative research, and provides opportunities to be involved in cross-disciplinary studies. JHU's E&PS program offers a wide variety of Earth science topics, as demonstrated in the program's six disciplines: Atmosphere, Oceans and Climate; Geochemistry; Geology and Geophysics; Global Change Science; Ecology and Paleoecology; Planets. Students may also participate in field work, learn the skills needed for grant writing, and attend conference presentations, in preparation for their post-doctorate careers.
