Dr. Damoah applies observations (remote sensing and in-situ), global 3D models (CCM and CTM) and radiative transfer models to quantify the impact of atmospheric pollutants on air quality and climate. He is also interested in the interactions between climate and human health.
Dr. Damoah received his PhD in Atmospheric Science from Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany in 2005. At University of Munich Germany (for 3 years), he worked with Atmospheric dispersion model FLEXPART and trajectory model FLEXTRA to study the long-range transport of boreal forest fire emissions and their effect on air quality. He and colleagues also did some studies on pyro-convective activities triggered by forest fires, which until recently were responsible for transport of particles from the surface into the middle Atmosphere. After graduation he was awarded UK’s NERC (Natural Environmental Research Council) Postdoctoral Research Associate position at University of Edinburgh, UK. At Edinburgh, he worked on producing and validating stratospheric/tropospheric chemistry-climate model, by coupling the SLIMCAT (stratosphere) and STOCHEM (troposphere) chemistry schemes onto the UK Met Office Unified Model (UM). This was a (3 year) joint project between University of Leeds and University of Edinburgh funded by NERC. The coupled model was to be used to address issues such as the impact of future changes in stratospheric O3 on STE and UV reaching the troposphere as well as the evolution of the ozone layer in a changing climate.
Before joining NASA’s GESTAR program, he was a Research Fellow at University of Waterloo in Canada working with Atmospheric dispersion model FLEXPART and trajectory model FLEXTRA to study long-range transport of pollutants into the Canadian high Arctic using PEARL (the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory) under the Consortium CANDAC (Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change, see http://www.candac.ca/). Although the major part of his work was on research, tutoring in atmospheric modeling was part of his duty. Currently, Dr. Damoah is Associate Research Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt Maryland, with MSU (Morgan State University) under the GESTAR (Goddard Earth Sciences Technology And Research) program using climate model to quantify the effects of atmospheric pollution on the climate.
