Recent Proposals Selected for Funding

In February 2020, Hiren Jethva’s proposal to NASA ROSES Aura Science Team Call was selected for funding. Dr. Jethva (614/USRA) is PI and Dr. Omar Torres (614/GSFC) is Co-I of the proposal “A one-and-half decade long global characterization of absorbing aerosols over clouds and sea-ice/snow using a synergy of A-train sensors OMI, CALIOP, MODIS, and CERES” (P.O.P.: April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2023). This proposal is aimed at characterizing the aerosol optical properties over clouds and snow/sea-ice, and subsequently develop global satellite products utilizing the synergy of NASA’s A-train sensors OMI, CALIOP, MODIS, and CERES.

In March 2020, Ed Nowottnick’s proposal to NASA ROSES Weather and Atmospheric Dynamics was awarded funding. Dr. Nowottnick (614/USRA, see image) is PI and Co-Is are Peter Colarco (614/GSFC), John Yorks (612/GSFC), and Jeff Reid (NRL) on the proposal “Untangling Interactions Between Tropical North Atlantic Dynamics and Saharan Dust Using Observations from the Joint NASA-ESA Aeolus Validation Campaign” (P.O.P.: 4/1/20 - 3/31/23). The proposal will use observations of dust and meteorology provided by the upcoming 2020 NASA Convective Processes Experiment – Aerosols & Winds (CPEX-AW) field campaign to identify key dynamical controls on Saharan dust that enable the long-range transport of giant-sized dust particles as far as the Caribbean.

Also in March, Cecile Rousseaux’s proposal to NASA PACE Science Team Call was selected for funding. Dr. Rousseaux (610.1/USRA) is PI on the proposal “Phytoplankton Algorithms and Data Assimilation: Preparing a Pre-launch Path to Exploit PACE Spectral Data” (P.O.P.: April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2022). “The lack of previous global ocean color satellite mission with spectral capabilities similar to those from PACE calls for a framework to assess and develop the best approaches and anticipate potential problems. She will exploit potential PACE capabilities by (1) developing algorithms to derive phytoplankton composition and (2) producing global, complete, hyperspectral water leaving radiances by assimilating the satellite radiances in an Earth System Model.”
